MEETING OF THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE 3.1 (ROAD SAFETY) IN THESSALONKI

18 - 19 April 2005

On Monday, April 18 th and on Tuesday, April 19 th 2005, in Thessaloniki , the 3rd meeting of PIARC Technical Committee 3.1 (Road Safety) was held.

The meeting was attended by 41 members of the Technical Committee and by the Secretary General of PIARC, Mr. Jean-Francois Corte.

The meeting started with an on opening address by the President of the Hellenic National Committee of PIARC, Mr. Sergios Lambropoulos.

At the beginning of the meeting, organization issues relating to PIARC, Technical Committee 3.1, and the individual work groups of the committee were discussed.

The following members of the Technical Committee proceeded to presentations regarding road safety conditions in their countries:

  Finland ( Aulis Nironen)

  Poland (Krzysztof Kowalski)

  Canada (Randy Sanderson)

  China (He Yong)

  Belgium (Michele Guillaume, Armand Rouffaert , Yves Fobelets , Vincianne Lerate )

Denmark ( Laurus Agustsson )

  Greece (Anastasios Tsaglas)

Then, the 4 individual work groups of the Technical Committee held a meeting to discuss the following issues:

  Making cost effective road safety investments

  Improving road design concepts in relation to road safety

  Taking advantage of intelligent vehicles and infrastructure technologies to improve road safety

  Taking into Consideration Human Behaviour

At the end of the meetings, the group heads presented the work progress and goals of each group.

Finally, the preparation of the Road Safety Seminar to be organized by PIARC in October 2005 in Peking was discussed. The schedule and scopes of the seminar were decided in cooperation with the Chinese representatives.

On Wednesday, April 20 th , there was a visit to the road section and traffic control center of Kastania deviation, on Egnatia motorway, and to the archaeological site of Vergina.
